BOOK: Bite

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I did not enjoy Bite. For the first time, twenty-two Laymon books later, I didn't find the experience satisfying. It could be that I followed the wholly satisfying experience of Stephen King's new epic with this one. Perhaps it's because I'm getting a little tired of constant extensive dialogue (the very reason I may be the only person who didn't enjoy Inglourious Basterds). In any case, Bite doesn't offer anything enjoyable, in my opinion. There are no surprises--a Richard Laymon trademark. The characters are weak, the plot remains loose, and the action is monotonous and boring. It's a shame, too, because every Laymon book I've read has been a literary journey unlike any other.

If you're thinking of trying Richard Laymon, steer clear of this pointless offering. As a fellow blogger once said about Takashi Miike, "With such a large body of work, there are bound to be misfires." Instead, I recommend any of the following: The Cellar, Island, Night in the Lonesome October, or The Woods Are Dark.

  1. Hmmm I have not read this one, and I have a friend who made this her only Laymon book she has read. When she told me how much she hated it, I explained that she wouldnt like anything that he wrote and that she just doesnt "get him or his style" Maybe I was wrong and it just is a poor book.
I find it such a shame that he is no longer with us. Whenever I read one of his books, I keep thinking to myself "why aren't there movies out there that are like this"?

  2. Regarding your last comment, I think the EXACT same thing every time I read one. And these days, with the MPAA allowing a reasonable amount of blood and guts, they could probably do a decent job adapting them. It is a shame he is no longer writing these gems (except for Bite, that is).

Glad to hear from another Laymon fan! This single book did ZERO damage to his abilities in my opinion. Urge your friend to try another one.

  3. A Laymon is always better than no Laymon for me. BITE is mid-level Laymon.

I always recommend THE CELLAR, QUAKE, ONE RAINY NIGHT, ENDLESS NIGHT, THE WOODS ARE DARK, RESURRECTION DREAMS, and FUNLAND.

  4. Phantom - Ah, yes! Indeed, you are correct: "A Laymon is always better than no Laymon."

    Resurrection Dreams is brilliant!
